Who is Agustin Tapia?
Agustin Tapia is an Argentinian professional padel player, born in 1999 in Catamarca. He is left-handed and plays the left side of the court (the advantage side) in partnership with Spanish world number one Arturo Coello. The pair has dominated Premier Padel since 2023 and Tapia consistently sits in the world top three.
Style
Tapia plays an unusually creative defensive game with elite wall play and recovery from deep positions. His backhand wall recoveries and bajada returns are widely regarded as the cleanest in the men’s tour. Combined with Coello’s overhead game on the right, the partnership covers both halves of the court at the highest level.
Argentinian padel tradition
Tapia represents the strong Argentinian tradition of creative, wall-aware padel - the same school of play that produced Fernando Belasteguin, Sanyo Gutierrez and other earlier-era greats. The country has consistently been one of padel’s three core nations (alongside Spain and Uruguay) and Tapia is the current standard-bearer for the Argentinian style.
Coach tip: Watch Tapia for the cleanest example of bajada wall recoveries at pro level. His left-handed angles are different from most amateurs you watch, but the technique - especially the patience to let the ball play off the back glass - is transferable to any back-court player.
Common mistakes
Trying to replicate Tapia’s exact wall-play timing is the most common amateur mistake - his timing is calibrated over thousands of hours of professional reps. Take the principles (let the wall do the work, trust the geometry) rather than trying to mimic the technique frame-for-frame.
