About Barnt Green Sports Club

Barnt Green Sports Club is a multi-sport members club at Margesson Drive, Barnt Green, Birmingham B45 8LR, on the southern edge of the West Midlands just inside Worcestershire. The club added three floodlit Spanish-style padel courts in July 2024, an early purpose-built padel venue for Bromsgrove, Redditch and south Birmingham.

Margesson Drive sits a short drive from the A38 Bristol Road South and the M42 junction 1. Barnt Green railway station is roughly half a mile away on the Cross-City line into Birmingham New Street, giving easy rail access for players coming in from the city centre.

The venue runs a hybrid model: members get priority court access and reduced rates, while non-members can book through the same online system on a pay-and-play basis. Membership is currently in high demand, so pay-and-play is the practical entry point for visiting players.

Alongside padel, the club covers tennis, badminton, squash, table tennis, pickleball, cycling and running from the same Margesson Drive site, giving padel players access to a full multi-sport clubhouse.

The padel courts

The club has three full-size Spanish padel courts built to the standard 20m x 10m enclosed format, with glass back walls and metal-mesh side panels. All three are outdoor and floodlit, which keeps evening sessions running through the autumn and winter months. Floodlight use is included in the court fee, so there is no separate lighting surcharge after dark.

The courts opened in July 2024 and remain in strong condition, with artificial-turf surfaces designed for the slower bounce that Spanish-style play favours. Court hire equipment is available on site: padel rackets can be hired at the desk, and balls can be purchased from the clubhouse bar.

Booking padel and access

Pay-and-play padel costs £28 per 75 minutes at peak times (Monday to Friday 4.30pm to 8.15pm and all day at weekends) and £24 per 75 minutes at off-peak times. Members pay £4 per session at peak and £2 off-peak. Floodlights are included in all rates. Racket hire is available for £5 per booking.

Non-members book through the club portal at my.barntgreensportsclub.co.uk, up to one week in advance. Members get a two-week booking window. The booking system handles court allocation, ball collection codes and any cancellations. The club requests reasonable notice on cancellations so the slot can be released to other players.

The site is open access through the day, with free on-site parking next to the clubhouse. Changing rooms with showers, a licensed bar and a kitchen serving food sit inside the main clubhouse, which is open to padel players during operating hours. Contact the office on 0121 445 1978 or via the website at barntgreensportsclub.co.uk.

Programme and social padel

The club runs four weekly social padel sessions for members on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons, pitched at beginner and intermediate players. The sessions are volunteer-led and free for members, who supply the balls. Non-members are typically asked to join via pay-and-play court hire rather than dropping into the social rota.

Coaching is led by Paul Cowie, head padel coach and one of around fifty LTA-licensed padel coaches in the UK. Individual and small-group lessons run by arrangement - see the coaching tab for current contact details and rates. The club also hosts internal padel events, ladder play and occasional taster days to introduce tennis members to the sport.

Best for

Barnt Green Sports Club suits players based in south Birmingham, Bromsgrove, Redditch and the Lickey Hills villages who want a settled members-club setting with predictable evening court availability. The mixed membership and pay-and-play model lets visitors try the courts without committing, while regulars benefit from low member rates and reserved social slots.

The club is less suited to players looking for indoor courts during heavy rain - all three padel courts are outdoor - and to drop-in tourists hoping to join a Thursday social session without prior membership. For these players the pay-and-play court hire route is the right starting point, and walk-on availability is normally best at off-peak weekday daytime slots.
