Padel in the USA 2026: How Big It Is and Where to Play
The short answer

Padel is a doubles racket sport played with a solid, stringless racket on a glass-walled court 20 m by 10 m (about 66 ft by 33 ft), where the ball can bounce off the walls. In the United States it is small but growing fast. The US Padel Association (USPA) said in April 2026 that just over 1,000 courts were open across 31 states, and that 1,073,000 Americans played padel in 2025, citing the Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA). Padeli lists 153 US clubs with 743 courts, and the median peak price is $80 an hour for the whole court. Last updated: October 2026.

This is a country overview for readers in America. It covers what the game is, how big it is, who runs it, where to play and what it costs. For depth on any part, we link to the full guide. Prices and counts from Padeli were checked on 28 October 2026.

What is padel, in American terms?

Think of it as a cross between tennis and squash. Four people play doubles on a court enclosed by glass and mesh walls. You hit the ball with a solid racket that has no strings, and you may play it off the walls after it has bounced on your side. Scoring follows tennis: 15, 30, 40 and game. Our what is padel guide has the full picture, and the rules take about ten minutes to learn.

Padel was invented in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1969 and became huge in Spain and Argentina. We cover that in our history of padel. Americans often call it padel tennis or the padel sport, and you will see both phrases online. It is a separate game from tennis, with its own court and its own racket.

How big is padel in the USA?

The best current figure comes from the sport’s own governing body. In a release dated 13 April 2026, the USPA said there were “just over 1,000 courts open across 31 states”. It also said the SFIA 2026 Topline Participation Report counted 1,073,000 Americans who played padel in 2025. Both numbers come from the USPA’s summary rather than from the SFIA report itself, which we have not read. You can read the USPA release.

A year earlier the picture was smaller. Misitrano Consulting figures, cited by Private Club Marketing, put the US at 688 courts across 180 facilities by mid-2025. The USPA projects that the US could reach 10,000 courts and more than 10 million players by 2030. That is a forecast from the association, not a measured figure.

Padeli counts differently. We list clubs from public data, so a new venue may not be on our map yet. On 28 October 2026 we listed 153 clubs and 743 courts, of which 395 were indoor. Treat our figure as a floor for the clubs we have found and the USPA’s as the wider estimate.

Who runs padel in the USA?

The United States Padel Association, or USPA, describes itself as the national governing body for padel in the country and says the International Padel Federation (FIP) recognises it. In October 2025 it announced 115 tournaments for the first half of 2026, which it called its largest calendar yet. Read the USPA calendar announcement.

In 2025 the USPA held a wild card tournament that put five American pairs into the Miami Premier Padel P1. Its report calls it the first time several US teams had played a Premier Padel event (USPA report).

Padel or pickleball?

Pickleball is an American invention from 1965 and is far better known in the US. The two games feel different. Pickleball uses a paddle and a perforated plastic ball on a court of 13.4 m by 6.1 m (about 44 ft by 20 ft) with no walls, and it can be played as singles or doubles. Padel is always doubles, uses a solid racket on a bigger enclosed court, and rallies tend to run longer. Some US clubs, such as Tempo Padel and Pickleball Club in Houston and The Set Padel and Pickleball in Doral, host both sports. Our full padel vs pickleball guide goes into detail, and the comparison with tennis and squash covers the rest.
