Players often change sponsor between seasons, usually in December or January, so expect this list to shift. Copying a pro’s racket is only worth it if you play the same way: a 370 g diamond is built for someone who hits overheads for a living.

Padel racket buying basics: shape, weight and price

Which shape suits you?

Shape decides where the sweet spot sits, and it matters more than brand. Round rackets have a big, central sweet spot and are the easiest to control, which is why we recommend them to beginners. Teardrops sit in the middle and suit most improving players.

Diamond rackets push the sweet spot up towards the tip for maximum power on smashes, but they punish off-centre hits. Hybrid and geometric shapes, like the Neuron 02, aim for something between a teardrop and a diamond.

How heavy should a padel racket be?

Most adult rackets weigh between about 350 g and 375 g. Lighter frames are quicker and easier on the arm, which suits beginners, juniors and many women. Heavier frames feel more stable on hard balls and add power, but they tire the arm sooner. Balance matters as much as the number on the scale. A high-balance racket feels heavier than it is, because more of the weight sits in the head.

Carbon or fibreglass?

Fibreglass faces are softer and more forgiving, and they are the norm on rackets under £100. Carbon faces are stiffer, more precise and more powerful. Labels such as 3K, 12K and 18K describe how many thousand carbon filaments go into each bundle of the weave. Many mid-range rackets, like the Counter Veron and Elite W, blend the two.

The core matters too: softer EVA or foam gives more pop on slow balls, harder rubber more control on fast ones.

How much should you spend?

Beginners need not spend more than about £50 to £100. Improving players get the most for their money between about £90 and £190. Pro models list at £270 to £340, but they are regularly discounted to between £150 and £260, so there is rarely a reason to pay full price.

Spending more at the start is usually wasted. A stiff pro diamond in a beginner’s hands is harder to control and harder on the arm.

How long does a padel racket last?

The foam core slowly softens with use, so a racket loses some of its pop over time. Many regular players replace theirs after around a year of playing two or three times a week, although no brand publishes an official lifespan. A crack in the frame, a rattle inside or a noticeably dead feel are signs it is time.
